Travertine & Limestone

Travertine is a limestone derivative with an intriguing backstory. When slightly acidic rain dissolves limestone deposits and gets fed through the earth’s geothermally heated groundwater system, it is altered by the temperature and pressure. The calcium carbonate in the original limestone recrystallises over the vegetation at hot springs where the groundwater surfaces, giving rise to the elongated cavities responsible for travertine’s spongy appearance and porous nature. These elongated cavities allow for the pattern in travertine to be accentuated differently depending on how the stone is cut. Travertine’s distinctive patterned appearance of long streaks creates a zen-like effect usually in beige, white, gold, and more rarely, grey-blue. This stone requires some maintenance and performs best in low traffic areas. heat resistant ring the simple beauty of the sea into your home with the natural look of limestone. Formed from the remnants of aquatic life, limestone is charming with its natural grays, brown tones and subtle impressions of tiny shells and sea-life microskeletons. The properties of limestone make it ideal for areas that are not subject to heavy use, and its organic laid-back vibe make it a natural choice for bathrooms. The porosity of limestone necessitates proper sealing and regular maintenance. While limestone is softer than the more tempered marble, it is also less fragile, and surface damage like scratches are relatively easy to repair. heat resistant  easy to repair

Marble

Intense heat and pressure over time cause limestone or dolomite to metamorphose into the magnificent stone we know as marble, and it only gets more lovely with time. The classic luxury of marble is second to none. Sand or other substances present during formation lead to marble’s patterns of coloured bands. Marble is suitable for most surfaces, but it does need care and performs best in low traffic spaces or situations. While heat resistant, it is relatively porous and can therefore be damaged by chemicals or lingering spills. At Open Plan Design, we ensure your marble is properly sealed and treated to protect its lustre and beauty.

Granite

Granite is a durable, low maintenance, scratch resistant and heat resistant stone often used for kitchen worktops and bathroom surfaces, and durable enough for floors and walls as well. The mineral composition of granite gives each piece of stone its unique appearance. The presence of quartz, for example, can produce pretty pink hues in granite. We recommend a visit to the Open Plan Design showroom to select your own particular granite slabs. As we stock a large selection of fine granite, we can ensure quick delivery. Next, we design and manufacture to your specifications.

Onyx

By any measure, onyx is an exotic stone. Made of chalcedony, it creates a lavish look marked by parallel coloured bands that are often striking in their contrast. As with all natural stone, no two pieces of onyx are exactly the same, but with onyx, the differences are far more noticeable, highlighting a unique quality of this other-worldly stone. The translucence of this stone lends itself to dramatic effects when backlit. Onyx is fairly delicate, in that it is not heat, stain or scratch resistant. While onyx is most suited to low traffic areas, there are endless possibilities for its use – walls, splashbacks, desks, counters, bars, vanities, bed frames and ceilings. No other stone compares in variability of appearance or compatibility with the modern design aesthetic. If your design goal is to create impact, onyx is one of your strongest allies.
